The SHO staff places a great deal of emphasis on matching the interests, availability, and talents of prospective volunteers with the needs of local agencies and individuals. Training and supervision are provided for volunteers. Participants are honored at volunteer meetings and socials, in our quarterly newsletter, and at our annual recognition luncheon. Orientations are held for new volunteers. Volunteers are briefed on the programs and volunteer opportunities. Volunteers fill out a form identifying their interests and qualifications for placement. Opportunities and/or need for services are matched to a volunteer, who is then contacted about the possibility of placement. If it is a match for the volunteer and the requestor, the volunteer is given information about the request, and the volunteer calls the requestor to discuss the specifics. If you are interested in serving the community, or your organization can benefit from SHO volunteers, contact us at our office at (401) 789-2362 or e-mail us at seniors-rsvp@netsense.net. You can also fill in a volunteer registration form at the following link: VolRegForm and submit the form directly to the SHO Office.
Volunteer Opportunities
Companionship and support to the homebound on a regular basis, usually once a week. SHO volunteers are matched with people of similar interests, if possible, and spend about one hour a week visiting elderly or handicapped persons in their homes or healthcare facilities. Relationships are fostered by these visits and at the volunteer's option may exceed one hour a week. Visits accomplish a weekly safety check and can be as encompassing as the volunteer wishes and may include running errands and occasional trips to medical appointments. For more information, please contact the office at (401) 789-2362 or e mail us at seniors-rsvp@netsense.net [UP] Take individuals to medical appointments, hospital visits, and an occasional errand by appointment. Office staff will call, usually a few days in advance, to check your availability to match with a transportation request. [UP]
SHO manages the Meals on Wheels Program for South Kingstown, RI and Narragansett, RI. The program provides nutritious noon-time meals to the homebound or those recovering from a hospital stay. In addition to the delivery of meals, this program provides a daily safety check. Meals on Wheels provides a sense of relief to families and friends who worry about the proper nutrition and health of their loved ones. Volunteers are involved with packing food into containers and delivering the meals in their own vehicles. If desired, volunteers can be reimbursed for mileage. The meals are packed between 10 and 10:30 A. M. Drivers are usually back at the distribution site around 12:00 noon. SHO has regular drivers and substitute drivers who provide backup for times when the regular drivers have a scheduling conflict. For more information, please contact the office at (401) 789-2362 or e-mail us at seniors-rsvp@netsense.net [UP] TeleCare provides a "friendly chat", a "safety check" call, or a call to remind an elder to take medication. The volunteer gives the person a sense of security and a feeling that someone cares. The phone call adds a whole new dimension to the elderly person's life. It is something to look forward to. Elders and homebound enjoy the personal contact. The volunteer will call at an agreed upon time, generally once or twice a week, but calls can be more often. If you are interested in participating in this program, either as a volunteer caller or a recipient, please call SHO at (401) 789-2362 or e-mail us at seniors-rsvp@netsense.net [UP] This program makes use of your life's lessons and expertise to develop a meaningful relationship with the youth of Washington County.
